When did you realize you were really in labor?
After a doctor's appointment on my due date, I started to feel wet. At first I chalked it up to having had a cervical exam, but after a few hours, and soaking through multiple pads and pants, I knew my water must be leaking.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging part of going natural was getting through the transition stage right before pushing. I had no idea how long I had been in labor or what was going on. It's difficult relinquishing all control to your body and trusting your loved one to make any needed decisions.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Practice, practice, practice. My husband and I took a natural childbirth class that had us both practicing relaxation techniques. It also explained childbirth in full detail so we knew what to expect.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
My pushing stage lasted about 20 minutes and then my son was out! I had originally wanted to let him emerge spontaneously to reduce the risk of tearing, but that's easier said then done when you have the urge.

Educate yourselves and learn as much about the process as you can. Labor is less scary when you know what to expect - even the bad things.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Having my husband apply counter pressure and massage my mid to lower back eased the pain the best. Also, relaxing, breathing normally, and staying off my back.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I gave birth in a classic V position. I was sitting up but reclined, with family members helping to hold my legs in a squatting like position.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Strange. I was so tired it didn't register at first that he was MY baby - it sort of felt like I had run a marathon, collapsed, and someone handed me a random baby! But once he latched on for the first time, I knew I had always loved him.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Educate yourselves and learn as much about the process as you can. Labor is less scary when you know what to expect - even the bad things.
