What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Constantly remind myself that my body knows what to do even if I feel unsure. I did more mental preparation this time around which helped me to trust my body.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
That I not only had a wonderfully successful and unmedicated VBAC but also that this hospital birth was far more peaceful and smooth than I could've hoped for.
-
Trust your body. Don't let anyone pressure you to do something you're uncomfortable with. Get people that will be in your corner rooting for you, not projecting fear onto you.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Focusing on relaxing each body part one by one through each contraction. I also recalled our adventure to Hawaii a few years ago and pictured myself on the beach or somewhere else that was significantly relaxing to me.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On all fours!
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It felt miraculous. It was miraculous that I grew this little human inside my body and then my body knew what to do and when to do it to get her into my arms. I'm truly amazed.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Trust your body. Don't let anyone pressure you to do something you're uncomfortable with. Get people that will be in your corner rooting for you, not projecting fear onto you. (I switched to a different provider at 36 weeks because I felt uncomfortable and I'm so glad I did!) Focus on relaxing your entire body, one part at a time, through each contraction. Wait for the overwhelming urge to push. It will be very obvious! You'll hold your baby soon.
