When did you realize you were really in labor?
When contractions started coming steadily 20 mins apart. I now realize my labor started the day before. I had diarrhea all day, lost my mucus plug in the evening and had mild cramping off and on all night and through the following day until early evening when the contractions suddenly became stronger.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Not knowing when the end would be. I was in serious pain for about 12 hours, about eight of those hours pushing with what seemed no end in sight. I was headstrong and unwavering about going natural but just wanted a bit of hope the end was near, but of course no one can really tell you that!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I researched, watched documentaries on natural birth, and read a ton. In the end, I was running on instinct and adrenaline.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
My ability to endure the pain. Not only the pain of contractions but also dealing with pubic symphysis separation and a fourth degree tear! I had no clue pubic symphysis desperation was even possible until it happened to me. I was unable to walk for over a month!

It feels good to be completely alert and know you accomplished something amazing! Something only you can do! I felt great in gifting my child a drug-free entrance into the world.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Sitting in water and small electromagnetic shocks to lower back.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
My son was on his side, facing my leg, so that made it difficult to get through my already petite pelvis. They had me on my left side because that seemed to help open up my pelvis. However, I ultimately delivered on my back with my knees pulled back.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Overwhelming. I was so exhausted, relieved, and it was completely surreal. I had a hard time believing that little human being had just come out of me! We both cried a little then settled into each other.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
You CAN do it! The pain miraculously disappears the moment the baby is out and your body recuperates fairly quickly. It feels good to be completely alert and know you accomplished something amazing! Something only you can do! I felt great in gifting my child a drug-free entrance into the world.
