When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had been having contractions for about a week so when early labor started I didn't think the contractions would continue. It wasn't until they were 2-3 minutes apart that I knew it was actual labor and I called my midwife.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The anxiety of knowing it was going to be painful and not knowing how long it would last was a big challenge for me. Then when labor actually started and the contractions were more painful, convincing myself I was strong enough to go through labor naturally was another challenge.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I practiced breathing through pain from about 20 weeks. I had Braxton Hicks contractions and very painful round ligament stretching. While I knew it wasn't the same I figured if I could breathe through those it would be good practice. I also practiced positive thoughts about being able to handle the pain.

What surprised you about your birth?
That it only lasted 3 hours :) my first birth was 42 hours so only laboring for 3 hours was surprising and wonderful.
-
It is possible! I didn't believe I could do it but was able to let my body do what it was supposed to.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
I had my husband rub my back for the really painful contractions. I also was on my hands and knees with pillows under my stomach and I would sway back and forth.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
In a squatted position in the birthing tub.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It was incredible and felt like it was a dream.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
It is possible! I didn't believe I could do it but was able to let my body do what it was supposed to. Watch relaxation videos. Find a position that is comfortable during pregnancy and use that during labor. The worst pain will be minutes before you hold your beautiful baby!
