When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had a very irregular labor pattern this time, but I would probably say about 3 am because the contractions just wouldn't go away and were a lot more intense.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I would say it's always hard for me to bear with the pain associated with contractions. I don't have high pain tolerance.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Breathing is such a critical part of my labors. It really helps me release into the tension caused by the contractions. Otherwise I'd be fighting against my body.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
I really expected it to be shorter because of my last birth, but it ended up a little longer and quite a bit more painful due to my son's head being in an awkward position.

EVERY birth is unique and you are NEVER a failure no matter how it turns out.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Counter pressure and breathing through contractions really help me, but the birthing tub full of warm water was a life saver this time.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I was leaning back in the tub with my husband and midwife's assistant holding me up while I pushed.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Such beautiful relief that it was all over and he was safely with me at last. He was almost two weeks late so the wait was definitely harder toward the end.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Always trust that your body knows how to do this, but also don't project things onto your birth that would disappoint you if they didn't come true. Just understand EVERY birth is unique and you are NEVER a failure no matter how it turns out. You are beautiful and able, dear mama! Believe it!
