Birth Stories

Bekka's C-Section Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I realized I was in labor about 5am. I had been having contractions about every 5 minutes for two hours. I prayed at 4:30 and said ok, Lord if he is coming today let these continue until 5 and I'll wake my mom. At 5:15 I decided to wake her.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Overcoming my fear and letting things be out of my control. Ultimately I was unable to deliver natural. Once I started to push,(nearly 21 hours later)my sons heart rate dropped drastically and then mine did(I have epilepsy) so they did an emergency c section.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Chriopractic care weekly, aromatherapy, use of herbs, music that meant something to me and acupuncture. Two days before labor I went to have a massage and I think it really helped to relax my body for labor.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How many different emotions I had but how overly calm I felt. Also, everything I had "planned" for that day went out the window. I was also so hungry since I hadn't eaten all day!

  • Do what works for you but also be prepared for other scenarios. I had researched c-sections but wish I had prepared for that scenario more. Be patient and don't rush your body. Your baby will come when they are ready and your body knows what to do!
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

My sister suggested I kneel down and over the coach or over the birthing ball. It helped tremendously with back labor. Also rocking back in forth(almost jumping) when they really intense.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    I ended up having a c-section

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was surreal. I cried and was so happy to have him in my arms, look in his eyes and feed him for the first time!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Do what works for you but also be prepared for other scenarios. I had researched c-sections but wish I had prepared for that scenario more. Be patient and don't rush your body. Your baby will come when they are ready and your body knows what to do!
