Emily Name Meaning

Mighty Emily is steadfast throughout history, bestowed upon literary figures and forward thinkers alike. Emily isn’t one to sit on the sidelines, always readily willing to lend a helping hand or offer a solution. She’s an artist, a saint, and a hard worker at heart, as seen in her meaning “industrious.”

Derived from the Latin aemulari, to emulate, Emily’s popularity has risen steadily over time thanks to her sweet sound and precious nicknames from the classic Em and Emma to the delicate Emmy. Emily has the desirable -lee ending commonly found in popular names like Lily and Paisley as well as the traditional appeal of the more formal Elizabeth and Victoria. Emily also avoids the juvenile feel found in some names ending with -ee.

Emily may be sweet but she’s no pushover. Emily is founded on strength and propels herself forward with her determination. She’s not afraid to move mountains or roll up her sleeves if it means achieving her goal. At the same time, she’s no stranger to enjoying evening tea or meandering the shops with friends. She’s versatile and wearable on a girl at any age.

Variants of Emily include Emma and Emilia. Classic names like Emily are Katherine and Rebecca while soft choices like Lucy or Ruby have a similar charm.

  1. I’ve never been a fan of my name simply because it is *so* common for my generation – I just wanted something a bit more unique! It is a classic, after all!

  2. Emily is pronounced equally in English, Spanish and Portuguese, the three languages our family speak.

For my baby’s middle name I chose Eliana. My mom’s name is Eliuth and my mother’s in-law name’s ends in “ana” so I put the two names together. It was super special when I google Eliana’s meaning and found out that it means “my God answered me.” My husband and I got pregnant after 13 months of trying so Eliana was perfect!! Much love to all of you and may God continue to bless you in your motherhood journey. <3
