Elspeth is much more common in England and is the scottish variant of Elizabeth. Both my husband and I have an Elizabeth in our family and we both have British ancestry. It’s also a very literary name and I’m a total bookworm- first heard the name in Her Fearful Symmetry. Family members who aren’t comfortable with the uncommon call her Elsie. The name works on so many levels! Reply Jay Dec 7 at 7:22 am My daughter loves her name and twelve years on, we’ve no regrets. Occasionally she gets mispronounced as ‘Elsbeth’ (a name more common in Scandinavia), but ether varient are lovely and extremely rare.
