Share Your Thoughts 6 Comments Kathryn Aug 3 at 7:17 am I’ve always liked the name- and as a Catholic St. Ambrose of Milan is a bishop and doctor of the church. I thought a great patron for my son to look up to! Reply Caitlyn Aug 5 at 12:51 pm Ambrose was named after St. Ambrose of Milan. His name means “Immortal” and we wanted to speak the Truth of Our Father’s everlasting life over him. We also wanted him to be named after a role model who was known for his faith, leadership, good service, and wisdom. Reply Rena Oct 1 at 1:40 pm St Ambrose was an amazing Bishop and is considered a great Church Father Reply Joie Apr 28 at 9:26 pm We named him for Ambrose of Milan. St Ambrose of Milan. We love that Ambrose was a teacher, that he’s associated with animals (and bees in particular), and we esp. love the way Augustine writes of him in Book V of the Confessions: “And to Milan I came, unto Ambrose the bishop, known to the whole world as among the best of men, Your devout servant; whose eloquent discourse did at that time strenuously dispense unto Your people the flour of Your wheat, the gladness of Your oil, and the sober intoxication of Your wine. To him was I unknowingly led by You, that by him I might knowingly be led to You. That man of God received me like a father, and looked with a benevolent and episcopal kindliness on my change of abode. And I began to love him, not at first, indeed, as a teacher of the truth — which I entirely despaired of in Your Church, — but as a man friendly to myself.” Reply Joie Dec 5 at 8:32 pm Ambrose was a teacher in the 4th century church and was influential in Augustine’s life as a man of warmth and fatherly care. He was a bee keeper and candlestick maker and loved all animals. ? Reply Julie Jun 8 at 11:18 am I wanted a name that was not super common but also not too unusual. I also prefer names without obvious nicknames. But most importantly, the name Ambrose has significant meaning in our faith, as he is named after one who sought after the truth, lived courageously by trusting in God, and was known for his charity to the poor.
