How accurate is IntelliGender? We take the test, and then check the results against a MaterniT21 test, a non-invasive blood test that is highly accurate.
Have you ever heard of gender swaying? We did a little bit of planning around baby no. 2, so we were definitely excited to find out the sex of the baby. We wondered: Is there really something to swaying?? Maybe the IntelliGender Test could help us find out a little sooner than we normally could via ultrasound?!
What is IntelliGender?
First, let’s back up just a bit. The IntelliGender is an over-the-counter test you can buy on their website and at select drugstores.
It’s a simple urine analysis test—similar to a pregnancy test. You take the test first thing in the morning (or at least 2- 1/2 hours after you last urinated), and it uses first morning urine combined with a proprietary mix of chemicals that reacts with hormones to reveal the gender of your baby.
When Can You Take the IntelliGender Test?
The IntelliGender urine test can be used as early as six weeks after the first day of your missed period—that’s at least three weeks earlier than other early gender tests, like blood tests.

Does IntelliGender Work for Twins?
If you are having identical twins, the test works exactly as it would if you were having a single baby. But if babies are fraternal twins, it gets a little trickier. If the test reads girl, you can generally assume that both babies are girls. However, if the test reads boy, you can generally assume that at least one baby is a boy. To confirm the gender or both babies, you’ll likely have to wait for a blood test of ultrasound to get the most accurate results.
How to Read the Results
Once you’ve urinated in the sample cup provided, simply swirl it rapidly in a circular motion. Then, place the kit on a flat white surface. Leave it undisturbed until the testing period is over. At this point, you will be able to visually see your results.
- If you’re having a boy, the urine in the sample cup will appear a dark greenish-blue.
- If you are having a girl, the urine in the sample cup will look yellowish-pink.

How Accurate is IntelliGender?
According to even the IntelliGender website, this gender predictor is just for fun. There is no accuracy rate listed on the product or their website. Here’s what the site says about the accuracy of IntelliGender:
“Please remember that the test is not 100% accurate. IntelliGender is committed to providing fun products for moms along their pregnancy journey.”
“IntelliGender does not recommend making any financial, emotional or family planning decisions based on the test results. This includes painting a nursery!”
Note: According to the IntelliGender website, there may be a link between false boy results and recent intimacy. For the most accurate results, they recommend abstaining from intercourse for at least 48 hours before taking the test.
