When did you realize you were really in labor?
When contractions seemed more consistent. I timed those contractions for almost 18 hours or so & I knew they’re were getting stronger. We went into the hospital when I felt like things must be close but i was only 3cm. We went back home and 3 hours later my water broke and contractions intensified much more. When it was hard to stand or breathe through contractions, I knew it was time to go back to the hospital. So 3 more hours later we went back in and I was 6cm.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
There’s no comfortable position. Sitting and standing and laying down all hurt! But I did like sitting in the inflatable tub they had set up at the hospital. It help a tad more.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Read lots of books about natural birth. Mindful Birthing was a great book. I also felt very encouraged by other ladies I knew (including my mom) who went natural. They kept reminding me that it I could do it! I also meditated on scripture verses that reminded me that God is always with me and makes the impossible feel possible!

What surprised you about your birth?
The peak of contractions were VERY intense. I thought about asking for medicine almost every minute. But I also had the committed side that wanted to just stick with it a little longer. The amount of contractions you go through seems endless but it did ultimately bring progress! I was also surprised at how much blood oozes out during contractions. Lastly, there were times when I thought my body was freezing up but it was actually wanting me to push! My midwife told me not to resist it.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Big deep breaths, my husband swaying and making noises as I made them, swishing my hands in the water as I sat in the tub, viewing the contractions as waves
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back / side in the water
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Such a relief!

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
You CAN do it. Your body is designed to give birth and will guide you. Make up your mind beforehand that you are gonna go for it. Ask people in the room not to offer drugs. If they would have offered, a “yes” from me would have been all too easy !
