When did you realize you were really in labor?
I didn’t realize I was in labor until my contractions became so intense that they were almost on top of each other. I had been having inconsistent contractions all day (10-45 min apart) with no increase in intensity or regularity from the time I woke up until about 4 pm. Then- things got real.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I prepared and obsessed and read every natural birth story I could get my hands on but none of it actually helped when my contractions were 1-4 min apart. Actually nothing helped!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
The most helpful thing I did to prepare was to get my birthing A team assembled. This consisted of my sister, my midwives, doula and of course my husband.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
I didn’t get a break in between contractions. Once I reached 6cm (which took about an hour) my contractions were one after the other without a break (most times). I was expecting a slower transition, I planned on my husband playing piano for me, cleaning in between contractions. Instead it was like I was dropped in a war zone and nothing else mattered except surviving.

Be prepared for the unexpected! Or that nothing goes as planned. If you go in knowing everything can change, birth will be a better experience!
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Trying to relax. It was almost impossible but just the attempt was a little helpful. Also, deep breathing.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I labored on my side with a peanut ball but delivered on my back.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
It was beautiful. The first thing I told my daughter, instinctively, was that I was so proud of her. Birth isn’t easy for mamas but it’s work for baby too!

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Be prepared for the unexpected! Or that nothing goes as planned. If you go in knowing everything can change, birth will be a better experience!
