Hot Shower, Concentration, Breathing And Counting Helped Katie Achieve Her Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I was scheduled to be induced on October 19, six days past my due date. I woke up that morning to get ready and began having a few contractions on my own. They were regular and continued on the way to the hospital. I guess my body knew it was baby day!

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Transition. Oh my goodness! I dilated from 4cm to 8cm within 45 minutes, but after that it was so hard to stay focused. I wouldn't have been able to do it without help from my supportive husband and an amazing nurse who provided so many different comfort techniques, such as a hot shower, heat packs, a birthing ball, etc.

  • Version 2
  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Research, research, research! I read everything I could about natural childbirth! I was also not rigid on my plan. While I did want to attempt it, I also knew what my body could handle and did not want to fight against it. If I hadn't progressed as quickly as I did, I'm afraid I would have been too tired to push!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

That I did it! That was the first thing I said after she was born, was I did it. I couldn't believe I had managed to have my first baby in six hours, without an epidural!

  • The best feeling in the whole world.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Hot shower, concentration, breathing and counting.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

On my back. I pushed on all fours and on my sides for a while before delivery.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

The best feeling in the whole world.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Not to feel failed if you don't. You should be in tune enough with your body to know what your limit is and you shouldn't fight against that!
