When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had a placental abruption which resulted in preterm delivery for my first daughter. For this reason, my doctor chose to induce me at 40+3. As a natural-minded mom, it was difficult for me to be okay with the use of pitocin. For the sake of my health and baby's we decided it was still the best option. So I knew I was in labor when the pitocin started kicking in and my contractions became more regular and more intense.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I did a lot of research on the use of pitocin and read countless stories of women who said it made contractions too painful to go natural. This was very mentally defeating to me. So the most challenging part for me was coming to terms with needing an induction and knowing I was forcing my body into labor.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
My husband and I practiced contractions by holding ice cubes in my hands and breathing through it. I created positive birth affirmations on note cards that I read frequently. I walked a lot pushing my older daughter in her stroller and practicing my breathing techniques. I also prayed frequently and fervently to be able to experience a calm, natural labor where I felt in control.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised at how quickly I progressed. I went from being dilated 5 centimeters to holding my baby in an hour and a half!

I want mamas who have to be induced for a medical reason to know that it is possible to have a natural pitocin-induced labor! Yes, it's intense and painful, but you can do anything you set your mind to! Go into it knowing an epidural is not an option for you. Make sure you have other coping techniques on hand. You can do it!
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
My husband giving counter pressure on my lower back, being in the birthing tub, and sitting on the yoga ball.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back in the bed. I liked the ability to lay back and rest between contractions. I also asked for an oxygen mask as a focal point for my breathing and that really helped me.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
I couldn't believe she was out so quickly! I was completely in love and overwhelmed.
