When did you realize you were really in labor?
Since this was my first child I was not exactly sure what to expect on what true labor feels like. I had been having Braxton Hicks for a couple weeks leading up to the "big day," but I woke up at 5am that morning feeling a deeper and different sort of pressure more towards the front. I was initially a little excited because it was different than what I had previously experienced so I kept an eye on It to see if it progressed. My husband and I made a big breakfast that morning in case the contractions picked up and sure enough by 1pm it got to the point where things were getting serious and needed to lay down. My husband got his contraction timing app out and realized this was the real deal as my contractions got closer together and stronger.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing for me was to completely surrender to the process and the innate wisdom of the body. I tend towards wanting to be in control and sometimes a bit of a perfectionist - there's certainly not a lot of room for that in a natural labor!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
One of the most helpful things I did in order to prepare for childbirth was taking a birth class with my husband. That gave both of us the confidence in understanding what to expect during the labor which eased a lot of the stress and worry. I think that our healthy, natural childbirth was additionally due to eating very healthfully (even before conception), daily yoga and lots of squats! (Didn't even need stitches!)

What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised by how primal it was and how much I just got in the zone during active labor. After the birth, my husband reminded me of things that happened during the labor (haha like our cat biting my leg while I was in the bathroom having a contraction) and I felt as though I only remembered focusing on the contraction and remember nothing of the things going on around me. I was also surprised by how hungry I was immediately after giving birth - I had my husband fix me a full meal at 2am :)

You can do it! Your body is beautifully designed to handle childbirth. Supporting your body with healthy foods, simple exercises and learning about pregnancy and childbirth gives you the tools to provide your baby with the healthiest start possible.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Deep belly breathing and changing position based on what my body was telling me. The best pain relief for me was standing and hugging my husband during the contractions.

What position did you end up delivering in?
A modified side position hugging a pillow with my husband holding my leg.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Indescribable!!! Felt like I'd known her forever somehow and just wanted to give her a million kisses. Also felt so relieved that the contractions were over - haha.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
You can do it! Your body is beautifully designed to handle childbirth. Supporting your body with healthy foods, simple exercises and learning about pregnancy and childbirth gives you the tools to provide your baby with the healthiest start possible. I'd also say to make sure your partner is engaged in learning about labor/childbirth so that they feel informed and can help make decisions. It is truly such a beautiful process and when you see your baby's bright eyes, you will know it was all worth it.
