Moving, Breathing And Low Moaning Helped Mim During Her Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

At 10 am when my water broke on the chiropractors table after a pelvic adjustment. After that I called my husband at work and my midwife. She had me come in the office to confirm my water broke and then told me to return to the hospital by 6 pm or earlier. My contractions were pretty spaced out until about 3 pm when my husband and I were at the phone store after ice cream and a pedicure. Then we headed home and I was scrubbing a dog mess off the carpet on hands and knees and they were 5 minutes apart and I couldn't talk through them. So we headed to pick up my daughter from daycare and go meet the neighbor who was watching her en route to the hospital.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

It went so fast it was really intense at the end this time.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Attended a birthing class, had a prior baby natural, have a supportive husband

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    A. Water breaking at chiropractor
    B. Having him at 8:30pm when I didn't get to the hospital until 6 pm and into the delivery room until 7 pm.
    C. How much easier recovery was with a short labor versus my 2 days and 3 nights with my daughter.

  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Moving, breathing, holding husband's hands and looking in his eyes, some low moaning. thinking of the contractions moving him down.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Hands and knees. Meant to squat but while I was waiting on the squat bar I was in hands and knees position and got stuck.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

Amazing, he was smaller than my daughter so he seemed so scrawny at first but nursed within an hour. Such good natural instincts.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

You can do if you just get it in your head that you can. It's a mind game. Relax.
I also recommend going to the chiropractors to ensure baby has a straight shot out.
