Birth Pool Made It Easier For Ginny During Her Second Home Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

    Midnight

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Transition was the hardest. Contractions came very close together and many were double peaking. I threw up and I was very emotional and had moments of fear and doubt.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I took a Bradley child birth class before the birth of my first child.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was surprised by how instinctive the delivery was. My midwife was still setting up her equipment when the baby was born. I never had an internal exam and the birth was unassisted. My body took over and guided me through.

  • Remember, pain is just pain. It doesn't actually harm you, it just hurts. It starts to get better as soon as the baby is born and the recovery is so much faster.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Nothing relieved the pain but the birth pool made it easier for me to change positions as needed.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I was on my knees leaning over the side of the pool.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

I was in disbelief. I was totally elated.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

It is possible to have a natural birth for many women. Remember, pain is just pain. It doesn't actually harm you, it just hurts. It starts to get better as soon as the baby is born and the recovery is so much faster.
