When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had a planned c-section.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I didn't! I was not allowed to because I had another breech baby due to a bicournuate uterus. Three breech babies and three sections!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Pray. Seriously. It was a journey from my dream home birth with my first that was a rather traumatic c-section instead, to a fearful decision to have a second, to a simple request to God for my third. Becoming thankful for the c-sections rather than bitter and resentful was journey of faith that I am grateful for.

What surprised you about your birth?
This isn't natural, but drugs are good sometimes! I had no choice, of course, since I was going through surgery. So I might as well be comfortable! Also, for the second time the IV was the worst part, and this time it was because they told me not to eat or drink before coming in...well, I did anyway, but did stop drinking a couple hours before I went in. I normally drink A LOT, like quarts. I was SO thirsty, and sure enough, I was dehydrated, which made putting the IV in a nasty procedure. If I had drunk water up til going in, it would have been a breeze!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Morphine. Ha
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Helpless on the Operating table.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
This was the first time I got to hold my baby IN the Operating room. I'm not a very emotional person, but out of my three, this was the most connected I felt! Although, holding baby while paralyzed from the chest down, with a curtain on your chest, and only a neck to hold him on and one arm moveable, makes you feel like you are going to drop him! So, I ended up having my husband take him.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Be open to what may happen and give it over to God. He wants only good for us, and can redeem even a disappointment.
