Exercising Helped Ali During Her Birth Center Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

    Contractions started 4 minutes apart and I found it uncomfortable to sit.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

    The amniotic sac was pressing on my cervix, making it look like I was fully dilated and I began pushing. When my sac broke, my cervix closed and I had to stop pushing. I labored for another 1.5 hours before I could start pushing again. Resisting the urge to push was torture!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

    Exercise!!!

  • What surprised you about your birth?

    I labored for 9 hours, and although it was excruciating, the time flew by.

  • Exercise, yoga and meditation. Have a strong support system of people who fully support your goal.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

    Acupressure, deep breathing and swaying side to side.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

    I pushed in the squat position, on my left side and ultimately in lithotomy position.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    Wonderful and surreal!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

    Exercise, yoga and meditation. Have a strong support system of people who fully support your goal.
