When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had pretty mild contractions for about 4 hours before my husband and I went to sleep. I had false labor for a few days before and usually could sleep them away. I knew it was the real thing when I they were too intense for me to fall asleep and I had to breathe through them.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing about going natural was committing to such a physical task when I had never felt a contraction before. I had to promise it was worth the pain before I knew the pain.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I turned into a research sponge when we started thinking about natural birth. There were some nay-sayers and I had to make sure I was prepared and positive about our choice. We took a Bradley Method class and read several books so being educated and reassured of our decision was a huge key. I also think the most helpful thing we did was hire a doula.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised about what actually worked for pain management and positions I liked versus what I liked when we practiced during pregnancy. I couldn't do anything without a heating pad on my back and only did positions that came naturally.

Only surround yourself with people who believe you can do it. Education is important but support, whether that be family or doula, is vital

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Low moaning through every contraction was a must. Also, at what I would call my turning point, my doula read my birth affirmations I had written and showed me a picture of my ultrasound, reminding me of the promise I had made to my baby. I thought of this moment often for the following hours of labor.

What position did you end up delivering in?
Semi-sitting position with my husband behind me. I liked pulling my own legs back as well as how easy it was to rest in between contractions.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing!! All the hard work was finished and we finally put a face to who we were talking to for months and months.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Only surround yourself with people who believe you can do it. Education is important but support, whether that be family or doula, is vital. I was fortunate to have both and it got me through the hardest but most rewarding 28 hours.
