When did you realize you were really in labor?
Baby was late so I was induced. Labor came strong once my water broke.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
I didn't have an epidural, but the pitocin was intense! I didn't expect contractions so close and so intense. I only labored for 2 hours so the contractions came quick and fast. I was expecting a slower progression into labor.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
Taking a natural childbirth course with a doula really made me feel more confident in my abilities to birth a child. It also helped me and my partner to discuss what kind of birth we wanted and explore different possibilities.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
Definitely the speed and intensity of the labor. I did not expect to be done so soon. Also, the recovery afterwards - the stinging and the aches - but also how I was able to get up and walk immediately and didn't need any pain medication post-delivery. All of the nurses said I was the easiest patient, which makes me wonder how much more difficult labor and recovery can be for others.

Avoid pitocin if you can. Take a class, read books and blogs, and arm yourself with knowledge and confidence.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
Laying on my side and yelling. It was too intense to do anything else.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Surreal.. I couldn't believe I pushed out something so big!

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Avoid pitocin if you can. Take a class, read books and blogs, and arm yourself with knowledge and confidence. In a moment of weakness during delivery, I was offered nubrain and took it... Resist! It was believed that my newborn had trouble latching at first because of the drug, and it only took the slightest edge off for a total of 10 minutes.. So not worth it!
