When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had been on bedrest after going into labor at 34 weeks. I was cleared for normal activity at 38 weeks, a Tuesday, and went into labor again that Thursday!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
Pain during delivery! It's not really comparable to anything else, but a few hours is worth it for a happy, alert baby and an easier recovery for me.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
This being my third, I knew that "planning" a birth is pretty laughable. Baby will come how and when they are ready.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
Baby D was by far my smallest, I didn't even need to push. Ejection reflex took over and she was out in two contractions once I was complete-very different from my first two.

You CAN do it! Sometimes medical intervention is necessary for the health/safety of baby or mom, but at least attempting a natural birth is commendable and well worth it.
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
I had a diffuser running in the delivery room with clary sage and lavender. During the worst I just closed my eyes and remembered it would be over soon and I would finally get to hold my little girl.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
On my left side, it was less painful to lay on my side.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Wonderful! Our hospital practices the "golden hour" right after delivery of skin to skin and nursing. It was peaceful and lovely.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
You CAN do it! Sometimes medical intervention is necessary for the health/safety of baby or mom, but at least attempting a natural birth is commendable and well worth it.
