When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had to be induced on week 39 due to my baby’s heart condition. The hospital policies were to be induced although they were supportive for me to have a vaginal birth according to my preferences. They needed to have all the team ready for when the baby was born to take him to surgery. They put the balloon on my cervix which dilated up to 5 cm Thursday night. Since I didn’t have any contractions they broke my water Friday afternoon. Then they decided to give me Pitocin which for me was really hard to accept, Friday at 9 pm. However, I was so excited to get things going once contractions started! Baby was born Saturday at 7:30 am.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
To negotiate with doctors so we could wait as much as possible for the induction and to respect my birth preferences
To endure pain during contractions in a peaceful state of mind, being patient trusting my body was able to do this.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I watched the mama natural birth class, read the book. Read birth stories with my husband, listen to Christian Hypnobirthing tracks, went to the chiropractor, and hired a doula. Did the spinning babies exercises to be sure baby would be in a good position. Drink a lot of red raspberry leaf tea, and ate dates. Took borage oil capsules to induced labor, and had sex to induce labor. Walk 30 min a day throughout pregnancy, hike, and curb walk the last week. Bought a pretty hospital robe and pretty pajamas for when being admitted to the hospital. And got a pedicure!

What surprised you about your birth?
That Mental preparation is so important and being informed. It surprised me how Ready I was although I’ve never done this before. I had to be induced but still, I was able to vaginally deliver my baby with no pain medication. They respected my preference for a vaginal birth and didn’t push for a c-section for no reason. I think being prepared with all the resources of mama natural helped me achieve my dream although my baby was high risk and he had surgery immediately after birth. We even did skin to skin an delayed cord clumping for 1 min. After he was born. My family was scared thinking that baby would suffer during labour because of his heart condition and he was actually “a happy baby” even during pushing, according to the doctors. His heart rate was always great.
I was so happy I had the birth of my dreams even though the difficult situation of my baby’s health. I could give myself and my baby that beautiful experience. If I could do it anyone can, you just have to be committed and be ready for success!

Michael Joseph. Michael in honor of Saint Michael the archangel the prince of the Heavenly host. He is truly a warrior. Joseph in honor of st Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father which is also called the “terror of demons”. My baby is well protected by 2 powerful patrons.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Prepare yourself although is something natural our bodies are made to do. Our current culture doesn’t prepare us for this. So be really committed and enjoy the process as something beautiful and exciting. Always remain positive. Surround yourself with people that support you and mamas that inspire you.
