When did you realize you were really in labor?
My water broke spontaneously at 3:00 in the morning while I was in bed but already awake. There was no mistaking it for wetting the bed... it was a big gush!

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The transition phase, although mine was fairly short, was very intense. But then I found that pushing felt good!

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I took a Bradley Method childbirth class with my husband and also hired a doula. Best decision ever! I also stayed active my entire pregnancy, which I believe made a huge difference.

What surprised you about your birth?
A couple of things were unexpected for me. I did not expect my water to break first, and I also did not expect to only have a 7-hour labor considering it was my first. The biggest surprise came when my son was pretty much in the birth canal, and the doctor realized he was breech. Normally at the particular hospital, breech baby means automatic Cesarean, but we were so close to being done when they realized it that they let me keep going (with an extra OB, extra nurses, and the pediatrician in the room, and the OR on standby). Thank goodness I went all natural, otherwise I may not have been able to feel how to push him out!

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Low moaning and breathing with "horsey lips" were most effective for me.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I squatted for most of the pushing, but I was in a classic position with my feet up on the squat bar for the final push since the doctors needed to reach up to get his legs, arms, and head out after the butt came out.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing, although short. They needed to examine him right away and give him oxygen, so they had my husband cut the cord right away. After 5 minutes when his Apgar score was up to a 9 they gave him back to me, and we were instantly in love.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Do it! And hire a doula!
