When did you realize you were really in labor?
It took me a while to know for sure. I had a few false labor experiences over the weeks leading up. I think what really told me this was it was when I tried to take a nap and the contractions did not stop. They also became impossible to ignore.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
It become difficult to escape the pain. At some point I could no longer distract myself or pray through the contractions. They demanded my full attention and that was really hard. I realized that I had to focus on the outcome and just get through each individual contraction.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
During this entire pregnancy I tried to stay really active. I took long walks several times every day. I also used a prenatal yoga video to help alleviate pain. I think the yoga really helped my body during the birth.

What surprised you about your birth?
The biggest surprise was how fast it was. My first birth was very long, especially the pushing. This time it was fast and my body just seemed to know what it was doing.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
I found the exercise ball and walking to be the most helpful. I did a lot of walking during the first stages of labor and used the ball towards the end when it was really intense. I also found repeating positive thoughts and prayers during contractions was extremely helpful.

What position did you end up delivering in?
I was lying in the bed.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing! A year earlier, I lost a baby at 22 weeks. Having a healthy, crying and beautiful baby in my arms was the greatest gift.
