When did you realize you were really in labor?
I had 2 days of prelabor that would last hours and disappear for hours. Dr said it was my body preparing, but I still had time. The following day, I woke up at 5:30 with contractions and still thought it was just preparation. By 6:15, they were stronger and I woke my husband to tell him. I went to bathroom and my water broke. I only then, realized it was the real thing.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The fear of the unknown. I got to the hospital and transitioned in the waiting room (throwing up and shaking). By the time I got a room (7:30am), I was 9cm. When asked about pain management, I told my nurse that I wanted to go natural, but I was scared of pushing. She reassured me that I was already managing through the hardest part and pushing often gives the mom relief with something else to focus on. I needed her reassurance to get me past my fear.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I exercised everyday for 2 hours. I did bootcamp 5-6 days a week, walked at least 5 miles a day, and kept to a healthy diet. I truly believe my activity played a part in my 3 1/2 hour labor and strength to get through the pushing phase.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised that it went so fast. I didn't even think I was in labor for the first hour. I was only in the hospital for 1.5 hours before my guy was born.

Have a plan, but listen to your body during the labor. I had many techniques planned out and ready to be used, but I only used a couple because I was listening to my body and letting my body do the work.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Breathing through contractions and holding the hospital rail with my eyes closed to focus. Also, my husband said encouraging words the entire time. I needed his affirmation to stay strong and focused.

What position did you end up delivering in?
On my back in a hospital bed. My nurse holding one leg and my husband holding the other leg.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Surreal. Everything happened so fast that it took me time to comprehend that my baby was actually here.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Have a plan, but listen to your body during the labor. I had many techniques planned out and ready to be used, but I only used a couple because I was listening to my body and letting my body do the work.
