When did you realize you were really in labor?
My water broke around 4:50 in the morning and contractions started once I got into a hot shower.
-
What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
On the first day, it didn't seem too challenging. When we arrived at the hospital I was only dilated to a 3, and contractions were easy to breathe/moan through. The second day was rough. I was still at a 3 so they gave me Pitocin, and the contractions became so intense that I couldn't breathe or moan through them. I ended up getting some relief from Fentanyl.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I read- A LOT. I read my "What to Expect" book, I read a book by Ina May Gaskin, I did research and I watched a ton of birthing videos on YouTube.
-
What surprised you about your birth?
That even after 60 hours of exhausting labor I delivered my amazing boy naturally.
-
I didn't worry or stress at all because I felt so knowledgeable. Trust that your body is made for this and you CAN do it!
-
What pain relief strategies worked best?
On the first day, breathing/moaning and using a medicine ball.
On the second day, unfortunately giving in to using Fentanyl.
On the third day, I accepted the epidural. While it took the pain away long enough for me to finally get some rest before my son was born, I still felt quite a bit.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
Sitting in bed with my Mom and best friend holding my legs while my incredibly supportive husband kept me cool with damp cloths.
-
How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Amazing. I couldn't believe he was finally here!
-
What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Don't let anyone tell you that you can't. Research as much as you can so that you can be informed and comfortable. I didn't worry or stress at all because I felt so knowledgeable. Trust that your body is made for this and you CAN do it!
