Birth Stories

Megan's Challenging Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

I realized I was in labor at about 3:00 am when I noticed something dripping down my leg. I had been having irregular contractions for about 3 hours before this had happened, so I didn't think it was the real thing. As soon as I realized my water broke, that's when I knew it was for sure.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

I was in a really bad car accident when I was 25 weeks pregnant. I fractured my pelvis in 3 places, 2 of the fractures directly on my pubic bone. I wanted to have a natural birth again so bad, but I was scared that my fractures wouldn't be completely healed, or that I would make it worse. Many people told me that I should get a c section. So for me what was most challenging was not knowing what was going to happen in the birthing process.

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I honestly didn't really do much to prepare.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

I was so surprised at my baby's size, he was 9 lbs 2oz! I didn't know I could deliver such a big baby naturally.

  • Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. ❤ There was a light at the end of the tunnel. I was going to meet my sweet baby soon and all the pain would be worth it.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

For me it was knowing that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I was going to meet my sweet baby soon and all the pain would be worth it.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

I delivered on my back in a hospital bed, which honestly I was unhappy with. I kept telling the nurse that I needed to switch to another position because of the pressure on my back and she refused to let me. I definitely want to do a home birth with a midwife the next time around.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

It was the most amazing feeling in the entire world. After my accident I went into preterm labor which they were able to stop thank goodness. I also had many x rays. So the whole remainder of my pregnancy I had very bad anxiety about loosing him, or something being wrong with him. Holding him, seeing his beautiful face and knowing he was okay was the best feeling. I could never describe it.

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it. ❤
