When did you realize you were really in labor?
At 2:30 in the morning just as I was headed to bed. It had been an emotional and uncomfortable day and I was unwinding with a coloring book and some TV when the first real contraction hit and they just kept coming at about 5-8 minutes apart, lasting almost a minute.

What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing was keeping calm when the contractions got really intense ad painful. I really had to go inside myself and deal with them internally, taking them one at a time.

What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?
I read a ton of positive birth stories to help feel ready and unafraid. It was great at mentally preparing myself and convincing myself that I could do it; my body was capable of a natural birth and I didn't have to be afraid.

What surprised you about your birth?
I was surprised by how loud I ended up being during contractions, how intense they became, and how my sense of time was distorted. I pushed for 2.5 hours, but at the time it felt like it was both really fast and that it took forever.

What pain relief strategies worked best?
Taking deep breaths before the contractions peaked, making low, loud noises, and holding onto my partner. Rocking/swaying helped a lot too before the contractions became really intense.
-
What position did you end up delivering in?
I delivered in and semi-squatting position. Although, I pushed on my back ad side as well. My little girl came out sunny side up with her fists by her chin so I really needed the help of gravity at the end to get her out.

How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?
Slippery haha, but also unreal and amazing. I couldn't believe that she was actually here and that I had brought her into the world. It was the best feeling in the world.

What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?
Find a midwife that you really click with and feel comfortable around. If you don't feel supported by your birth team you are not going to have the birth you want and it will be a lot harder mentally.
