Julia's VBAC Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

Christmas Day I think it settled in... I had been having contractions, but didn't really know it because it was a totally new sensation to me, since my first baby was delivers very early by c-section.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Trying to stay intervention-free in a hospital setting. I actually ended up with an epidural because my blood pressure was very high (and I am certain that I probably would have needed a c-section without it), but was surprised at how well I was able to handle the contractions. Being prepared and not fearful worked wonders!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

I took a class in childbirth hypnosis, and it was really great! I had a very relaxing birth, actually, due to the hypnosis.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

Pushing was very satisfying. I have heard that said a bunch, and didn't quite know what people meant, but I get it now. It feels really good to be active when you have spent so long relaxing through contractions. Also, I now understand the truth in the statement "it's like pushing a watermelon out of something the size of a lemon" is not about relative size. Stretching was not uncomfortable, but I think it's what most people focus on in that statement. No, it's all about the watermelon rind. Accommodating my son's size was not the problem... How hard his skull was, on the other hand: feeling like I had a cannonball wedged inside was a much bigger deal to me.

  • Pushing was very satisfying. I have heard that said a bunch, and didn't quite know what people meant, but I get it now.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Relax, relax, relax! Also, my doula was fantastic at distracting me! Once the baby was in a + position, a peanut ball helped take a lot of pressure off.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

Traditional hospital, I'd say. Stirrups and all! I actually liked the stirrups, though... They helped me rest in between contractions. Before the doctor arrived, I tried a bunch of pushing positions, and I preferred side lying, but it was much harder on my hips and legs and wore me out.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

    AMAZING!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Know what you want most, but don't be afraid to change the plan if you must.
