Here are videos from my very first childbirth, a natural birth center birth assisted by a midwife and doula. It’s a 27-hour saga, with a happy ending.
Buckle up everyone, here’s the natural childbirth videos and story from my first birth! This was a birth center birth done with the help of a midwife and not one but two doulas.
Natural Childbirth Video Part 1: Labor
My labor began at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept 10 and lasted through the night and into the morning. I was unable to sleep, but managing fairly well. We called our doula over around noon and soon it was time to drive to the birthing center at a nearby hospital. When the midwife checked me out, I was 5cm dilated. Yeah for the rookie mom! We were worried I’d be at a 1 or 2.
I continued to labor in the birthing center – mainly in the shower and down on all fours with the birthing ball – till 4 p.m.
When my midwife rechecked me I was at a 7! Life was good. I had hope!
I labored for 2 more hours… very intense, very painful. Thank God for my husband Michael who literally held my back together with every contraction to help offset the pressure. I was rechecked at 6 p.m. and was making progress.
We labored for another half hour and then filled the birthing tub for a water birth…
Natural Childbirth Video Part 2: Delivery
I feel a little scared and self conscious posting this video, but hey, after childbirth a woman can face anything, right? This is part two of my childbirth story.
If only the in-person birth classes we took that first time around had prepared me for this!
I labored for another half hour as the nurse filled the birthing tub. Right as I hit the tub, I got the urge to push. My midwife checked me and said she could feel the baby’s head. So I went for it. I was on all fours and pushing my guts out.
I had intense 4-push contractions and everyone thought this baby would be out in less than an hour. Woo!
But the baby had other plans. He didn’t come after an hour of hard pushing. He didn’t come after two hours. Eventually, my contractions slowed and weakened.
I got out of the tub.
I was wiped out. My uterus was beyond exhausted. By 9 p.m. I was delirious with fatigue and dread.
I honestly didn’t know how I could get the strength to move forward and push the baby out.
I asked if I could go to sleep and deliver in the morning.
It didn’t help that I hadn’t eaten in 12 hours and I couldn’t imagine trying.
We needed to kick start my contractions again. With regret, I agreed to two drops of Pitocin, what my midwife called a “hit of Pit.” Sure enough, once the drops were in me, I moved to a birthing stool and squatted down on it. My contractions again.
I pushed like no one’s business.
After the first couple cycles, my husband Michael and the midwife saw the baby’s head crowning!
After a couple more push cycles, the midwife caught my baby and pressed him to my naked chest for some skin to skin. Praise the Lord!

Natural Childbirth Video Part 3: Reflections
Here are my reflections on this crazy saga!
What does a new, natural mama think of her 27-hour labor and everything that followed? This video pretty much sums it up. As a bonus, there’s a slideshow of our baby boy at the end.
Whew!
My second childbirth was the complete opposite of this one!
