Birth Stories

Heidi Prepared Herself for Her First Natural Hospital Birth

  • When did you realize you were really in labor?

Labor began around midnight. Was in denial until about 6am when I began heavily bleeding and couldn't focus on anything but my contractions.

  • What was the most challenging thing about going natural?

Being too exhausted to get in the position I wanted. Also that 40 minute car ride!

  • What was the most helpful thing you did to prepare for childbirth?

Hired a doula, read up and educated myself on everything! I mentally prepared myself and let it happen on its own.

  • What surprised you about your birth?

How fast it seemingly went (12.5 hours) and how even though it had been about 30 hours since I last slept I was on that adrenaline rush the second I met her.

  • I mentally prepared myself and let it happen on its own.
  • What pain relief strategies worked best?

Having my hips squeezed and rubbed. Focusing on one thing during contractions.

  • What position did you end up delivering in?

My back. The one I didn't want to be in, but I was too exhausted to move and they had insisted I be checked so I couldn't get off my back afterwards.

  • How did it feel to hold your baby for the first time?

What an exhilarating rush! It was over and I finally had her!

  • What advice can you give to other mamas who want to go natural?

Educate yourself!! Hire a doula and/or midwife! Know your options and immerse yourself deeply into each topic.
