Madeline Name Meaning

A literary darling of a name, Madeline has seen a serious bump in popularity since the 1990s. A vintage beauty with loads of style, parents can’t get enough of this posh English pick.

You may recognize her from the classic children’s series of books bearing her name, the story of a young girl in a French boarding school and her many adventures. The name no doubt takes on a bit of this spunk, wearing well on a girl ready to explore the world. Her nickname of Maddie is adorable, though Dell and Della are equally precious.

Madeline is a natural fit on a little one, a delicate name that is sweet as can be. At the same time, she’s mature enough to age into adulthood with ease. She has plenty of wearers in her past to prove it like actresses Madeline Zima and Madeline Kahn as well as suffragist Madeline McDowell Breckinridge.

With two pronunciations to choose from, Madeline has a versatility that’s hard to match. Most prefer the -lyn sound ending, but if you ask us, the -line ending is just as beautiful. Like the similar Coraline and Adeline, Madeline retains a rich European feel that gives her an added burst of fashion and wonder.

  1. This was my maternal Grandmother’s middle name. She helped raise me and I wanted to share her legacy with my daughter.

  2. My name IS Madeline, and no, not Madeleine, it’s Ma-de-lyn, but spelled M-a-d-e-l-i-n-e. I used to think I was the only one with the name, or at least spelled that way, so it’s really cool it’s on here. One thing that bugs me though is how everyone thinks it’s Madeleine like the book. The book just spelled Madeleine wrong.

    • The book didn’t spell it wrong, that’s the French spelling.

  3. We picked Madeline because it is the Modern name for Mary Magdalene. We wanted to pick a name that had biblical representation behind it. Both my husband and I loved the name, and think it is very beautiful. And the name is totally fitting for our sweet girl! She is such a blessing and we are so thankful for our sweet girl. 🙂

  4. The name Madeline Jo honors 2 amazing women in my life. The first is my mom, Mary Jo and second my grandmother, Delphine. Both of these women played a big role in shaping who I am today.

  5. Madeline is such a gorgeous name, me and my hubby both loved it and now our three year old daughter has such a wonderful name ?

  6. More than just the classic children’s story, but also the name of All American Girls Professional Baseball League player for the Racine Belles. Madeline English was a timely hitter with excellant speed with a never-say-die attitude. She a multible year All-Star in the AAGPBL and finished her career as one of the best players to have played in the league.

  7. It was a name that both my husband and I loved for a couple of reasons. First, we thought it sounded pretty and we loved that it can sound sophisticated, but also has a natural nickname (Maddie) with it. She can decide as she gets older what she wants to go by and she can even have friends call her Maddie and at work go by Madeline. It has no special family name for us, but it is the original English translation for Magdalene, as in Mary Magdalene from the Bible and as Christians who both have biblical names/meanings with our names, that was important to us.

    • How do you pronounce it?

  8. I decided my daughter’s name After the French Books about Madeline I’m fell in love with the name she also has my middle name which is been passed down from generation to generation as the 1st born girl

  9. I always loved the Madeline books growing up and during my pregnancy she just felt lime a Madeline

  10. Just like the book! “They left the house at half past nine, in two straight lines, come rain or shine…the smallest one was Madeline.”

  11. We got the name from the children’s book and thought it sounded really pretty and went well with our other kids names. We pronounce it with a long “i”. Her middle name is Grace and it’s a tribute to Gods Grace for answering our prayers for another girl.
