Avery Name Meaning

Avery is beloved for more than just its adorable elfish meaning thanks to its unisex flexibility and surname style. A surprising choice in a field of classics, Avery manages to hold onto its freshness despite being centuries old. A distant cousin of Aubrey, Avery is in a league of its own when it comes to cool factor.

Avery walks the delicate line between tomboy and girlish, mixing masculine roots with the soft -ee ending seen in Emily and Lily. She’s short and sweet yet packs a punch of spunk, dishing out a whole lot of sass in five letters. She fits in well with the on-trend V sound names like Evelyn and Ava but teeters just outside the norm. She’s unique in her own right, but perfectly at home alongside unisex monikers like Peyton or Madison.

A little Avery would be the perfect explorer, ready to conquer the playground one slide at a time. At the same time, she’s no stranger to playing dress up for a spot of afternoon tea with her favorite dolls. Like her name, she’s a chameleon that bends trends and flows freely.

Spelling variations of the name include Averie and Averi. Nicknames include Ave or Ava though a nickname is easily avoidable for those looking to stick with the full version.

  1. We saw it one day and just called her Avery while she was in my belly. And it just stuck! We thought she’d have red hair and it sounded perfect. She has brown hair now, we’ll see!

  2. I have always loved the name, yet had never looked at the meaning. Being our last baby and the last grand baby for my partners family, when I saw the meaning I knew it was the name we had to go with. My boyfriends father passed away 8 years ago and she was due a week before his anniversary of passing, his name is Alfred so we thought it was so cool it’s a variant of his name but also the same meaning of my name (Aubrey). We went with Averie for the spelling and Maddox for a middle name because my other two children have ‘M’ middle names just by chance so we figured we would keep it going

  3. Hi I’ve always loved the named Avery it’s just so pretty name but at school I get called Libby and come on Libby is not even close to Olivia. So I guess she will be called Ava .I know it’s weird but Ava is popular and I don’t what her name to be popular I want her to be unique

  4. I love my name also I read an amazing book series about elves so it’s like I was destined to read it with all the elf ruler stuff and all.

  6. Not super popular, easy to say and spell, beautiful sound to it.

  7. Because I’m a big Fan of Middle Earth and Tolkien Stories!
I researched and found out Avery was the name of the first queen of Elves in Tolkien myths.
Elves were strong and beautiful and Avery was a wise and beautiful queen.
So we chose Avery Yvonne as her full name cause I wanted something from Tolkien.
She has a brother named Aragon Roland.

  8. I love my name and think it is the best name. My mom chose Avery the day I was born. She had actually picked out several other names but looked at me and knew that my name should be Avery.

  9. Because as a Tolkien Fan, I wanted middle earth’s names. So we chose Avery cause she was the first queen of elves and it means Queen Of Elves.
    Her middle name is Eowyn.

  10. She just looked like an Avery, over the other name we had which was Olivia. My 2.5yo has nicknamed her Ree-Ree, that’s what it sounds like when he tries to say her name.

  11. My best friend is named Avery and I just love her name so much because it means “Queen of the Elves”! Also, my name and her name go hand in hand!

  12. My sister is named Avery, and she is so sweet, I love her name, and I think that our names go great together

  13. I was born in the 70s so growing up with the name Avery was full of variations. I got Ivory a lot. But as I got older it became more popular. Love my name, my parents did a good job.

  14. my husband and I wrote a list of names we liked and compared. Then we narrowed down the list of names we both had. Avery was the winner!

  15. I love my name! If I could change it i wouldn’t even try. I love my nickname too (Ave). My friends call me that. If you are an Avery or want to name your kid Avery love it!

  16. Love it. Easy to say and spell. First Avery I met was in 2018 and was a girl in her early 20s. It reminds me of Emily and Ava. I associate it with a female name but I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a boy named Avery either.

  17. Just always loved the name and love how it’s a alliteration to our last name Ames 🙂

  18. Wanted a non traditional name that wasnt popular but was not “out there”

  19. We chose the name Avery because our original name (taitum) was taken from us by a close friend. We told her our idea for a name and of course her baby was three weeks older so she used it for her little girl.
I like the name because its fits her and id a very pretty name for a girl.
Avery also loves taking her baths, crawling, laughing, saying “momma”, favorite food is sweet potatoes, very ticklish, and is just one of a kind.

  20. I’m a huge Grey’s Anatomy fan. Jackson Avery is so adorable! Also, all of my mother’s granddaughters’ names start with the letter A.

    • That is the exact reason my mom named me Avery!

  21. I named my BOY Avery because it’s a boys name variation of Alfred, which is a family name. It didn’t become a popular girls name until recently.

  22. I chose her name because I loved how it sounded and it goes with her planned middle name too Avery Ezriyah
