Adeline Name Meaning

A vintage pick that has rocketed in popularity, Adeline is a variant of Adelina and Adelaide. Meaning “noble one”, parents are loving Adeline’s nickname potential and sweet sound.

Adeline has classic roots, giving her a leg up on the competition with some parents as the vintage trend continues to rise. At the same time, she has a modern appeal that’s impossible to miss. Ad- names for girls are trending on the charts with Addison, Adriana, and Adele all joining Adeline.

While her nickname of Addie is an updated version of last decade’s Maddie, Adeline also has other nicknames up her sleeve. There are Dell, Lina, and Delia as well. She’s a tried and true name with a definite style though her nicknames add to her versatility.

Adeline is sweet and playful on a little one yet mature and womanly as she grows. A beautiful name with depth, she avoids feeling too cutesy. Adeline is also a bit posh, feeling effortlessly chic.

Her popularity is growing and is a bit higher than the charts let on, as she does have a few alternative spellings out there including Adelyn and Adalyn. Despite that, she’s a stunning pick that still sounds fresh. Some similar names to Adeline include Emmeline, Audrey, and Eliza.

  1. Adeline means noble. She’s named after my late great grandmother who is Bohemian from Czech Republic. The Czech variation is Adela.

  2. We are French and so pronunciation is Ade-leen.

    • Yes. All my French Teachers pronounce my name like that. A lot of people pronounce my name in many different ways.

When I was nine, my classmates tried giving me nicknames. Someone came up with “Ad” and then for four days (four day school trip) they also started calling me “Advert” or “Advertisement” because “Ad” was also short for that.

  3. My husband didn’t like any of my name suggestions so I decided to look up names that were of his family heritage of German and Polish. I stumbled upon Adeline and Adelaide. We loved Adeline! I love old fashioned names and it’s actually a victorian name. So Adeline it was! We get compliments on it all the time. He calls her Addie and I use Adeline because it’s pretty not to say whole. ?

  4. I’ve always loved this name, it’s timeless. Not something you hear often. My husband’s great grandmothers name was Adelina.

  5. Adelaide, Australia has a special spot in my husbands hearts. It just didn’t sound right with our last name but we knew we wanted to go that route. Adeline seemed to fit perfectly

  6. Adeline was the baby’s great-great-grandmother’s middle name.

  7. I named her Adeline because of the movie “Age of Adaline

Love Blake Lively’s character in that movie!

  8. I’m in love with old fashion, vintage names. And I love the movie “Ages of Adeline” and feel in love with the name.

  9. I love the meaning which is Nobel, adorned, and bright one. It is less common but still classy and easy to say. Plus we love the nickname Addy.

  10. Adeline was my grandmother’s name and I love family names. It is also a very strong sounding name. We like that we can call her “Ade” pronounced “Addie” for short.

  11. Adeline (pronounced “line” not “lynn”) is an old family name. My Great Grandmother, Great Aunt, and Great Cousin all share this name. Our little girl is only five months old, but so far, we love the name. People are pretty quick to try to call her Addie, but we are not big on nicknames, so we only call her Adeline.

  12. We love classic, timeless names, so my husband and I tried to pick something that would fit with our other daughter, Eloise. We loved Adele, but it didn’t work with our last name, so we went with Adeline. The name means noble, which is something I pray over our daughter. We often call our daughter Addie or Addie Mae, which is the only downside to her name–there are many names that are shortened to Addie or Addy these days, though Adeline is a little less common. I think if I could start over I would call her by another nickname to avoid her having the same name as her friends–like Della.
